Help your new employees acquire the knowledge and skills to learn their new job and
integrate into the campus culture.
New Employee Orientations
All full-time employees participate in a one-hour, one-on-one HR orientation covering
new employee paperwork, LCC policies, procedures, required trainings, and employee
benefits.
Part-time hourly employees participate in a 30-minute, one-on-one HR orientation covering
new employee paperwork, LCC policies, information about required trainings, hours,
restrictions, etc.
Help New Employees Get Settled
Often, newly hired employees are thrown in and expected to either sink or swim. HR recommends helping new employees feel connected.
Here are a few ideas that can help:
- Have an onboarding plan that sets up a timeline.
- Partner new employees with someone in the department that can be their "go to"
- Give new employees a campus tour and introduce them to other departments and teams--even
ones they may not work closely with.
- Name drop whenever you can. Having so many names to remember can seem overwhelming
to a new employee!
Fill Out Employee Directory
Make sure new employees complete required fields in the directory record. It is the
primary way other employees, students, the public, and the One-Stop Center know how
to contact them. Instructions are featured on the Employee Directory Help Page.
Set Goals
After your new employee has been here a few weeks, go over the job description again.
Share your expectations and set reasonable, achievable goals. Don't expect new employees
to know everything about their job. It can take months or even a year to learn the
job, as well as understand the campus culture, and the different department responsibilities
and workflows.
